Man flew without required ID cards

The parents of a mentally disabled Alberta man are demanding answers from Air Canada after he boarded a flight to London using a Costco membership card and a credit card.
Doug Tiedeman, 21, who has cerebral palsy and the mental capacity of a 12-year-old, was overwhelmed when he arrived by himself at London International Airport, his stepmother said.
“He was really scared,” said Simone Tiedeman. “He didn’t know who he could trust or where to go.”
Tiedeman and her husband Barry are upset with Air Canada. They say airline staff should not have allowed Doug to board a plane in Calgary because he did not have proper ID.
According to Transport Canada rules, adults need government-issued ID such as a driver’s licence or passport to board a passenger plane.
The couple also is upset that Air Canada would not provide information to them about their son after they learned he was flying to London.
Air Canada said it’s investigating what happened in Doug’s case because at least one piece of government-issued photo ID is required to board a flight.
The ordeal began April 27.
That’s when he took a taxi from his home in Red Deer to the Calgary airport. He then bought a ticket to London using only a Visa and Costco card as identification, Simone Tiedeman said.
Doug’s mother, with whom he was living, discovered he was missing.
She figured her son was planning to fly somewhere when she pushed re-dial on their phone and an Air Canada representative picked up on the other end. She then contacted Doug’s stepmother and father.
Simone Tiedeman said she was “terrified for Doug’s safety” and shocked the airline allowed him to board the plane.
The family contacted Air Canada, but because of privacy regulations the airline couldn’t confirm that Doug had bought a ticket, until police became involved.
Simone Tiedeman said her stepson flew to London to meet with a woman with whom he had chatted on Facebook.
Doug arrived in London around 10:30 p.m. and called his Facebook friend, who told him to contact his parents.
“She didn’t even know he was coming,” Simone Tiedeman said.
Doug then called his stepmother. Simone Tiedeman told him to find a person of authority in the airport who could help.
Doug found an airport employee who booked him a ticket home and set him up in a local hotel for the night, a first for Doug, who had never before spent the night alone.
“Our main concern was that Doug would fall victim to someone with ill intentions,” said Simone Tiedeman, who was relieved when her stepson landed safely in Calgary the following morning.
Officials at London’s airport said they were unable to comment on who assisted Doug upon his arrival.
Simone Tiedeman said Doug is still shaken over the incident and is very sorry for the worry he caused.
“He’s been staying pretty close to home.”
