CHICAGO (AP) — State officials say they’ll waive the $20 fee on state-issued identification cards for homeless people.
The law is effective July 1.
The Heartland Alliance is an advocacy organization. It says there are nearly 50,000 homeless people in Illinois and they need state identification for access to many services, including federal and state aid and job training.
The Alliance’s vice president, Heidi Nelson, says the law makes it easier for homeless people to have opportunities.
There are several qualifications to be eligible. They include that a person must lack a regular nighttime residence or relies on a shelter.
