Onyemenam, who was represented by Mrs Uche Chigbo, observed that the essential key to a GMPC is the linkage to a secure database with biometric verifications for an individual's identity.
The Director General said NIMC was given the mandate to develop and maintain the National Identity Database, registration of individuals, issuance of a General Multi-purpose Cards (GMPCs), and issuance of Unique National Identification Number (UNIN) and also provision of identity verification services, among others.
A press statement by the Head of Corporate Communications of NIMC Mr. Anthony Okwudiafor quoted the DG as saying that measures aimed at implementing the provisions of the NIMC Act to achieve the shift in paradigm from 'Card issuance' to identity management, rather than the erstwhile practice of issuance of identity cards to Nigerians and those who lay claims to being Nigerians.
"It will simplify service delivery in government agencies, reduce the proliferation of false identity documents and theft, streamline and reduce (if not completely) government involvement in funding Identity projects, and will help to fight crime and is a strong antidote to corrupt practices," he said.
Responding, the Speaker of the society Mr. Busayree Bello thanked the Director-General and the entire commission's staff for their hospitality, and wishes them God's guidance in their efforts of transforming the Identity Sector in Nigeria.
