Letters: License rules amount to national ID card
Regarding the editorial in theJuly 21 Argus Leader about the new federal documentation requirements to obtain a driver's license, it amazes me that people who speak for less government interference in their lives calmly accept that the driver's license has become a national identity card.
Much of the public did not want a national ID, so an end run was done to accomplish this. We are indeed lazy sheep who accept this without consideration or complaint.
The Argus Leader editorial said the new rules require people "to document every name change" since birth, which technically is not the case. If a woman has a valid passport, she need not bring a marriage license to get her driver's license. Of course, the passport costs more to get than other documentation, so it is impractical unless you already have one, and the next time you go, you might be asked for a marriage license unless you have renewed your passport.
Or is the new and improved license now a valid ID document for the next time a person needs to renew his or her driver's license? If not, what good is it?
Countries who have wanted to track certain groups used national ID cards to accomplish their purpose. Now we have such cards, too. The land of the free?
