Temple University in Philadelphia is upgrading its campus ID card to not only comply with Pennsylvania’s new voter ID law but to give the card a technology facelift, including adding contactless functionality.
The new card will be issued this fall and will include expiration dates as required by the new voter ID law.
The voter identification legislation requires voters to present a form of photo identification at polling stations before they are allowed to cast their ballot. Identifications without an expiration date–like the current Temple Owl cards–are not accepted.
“We expect we will probably reissue returning students during the first week of the fall semester,” said a school administrator.
The new card will also work at ATMs provided by PNC Bank. But the biggest feature will be the card’s “tap and go” function which will allow students, staff and faculty to enter buildings or the parking garage with a wave of the card. The contactless technology will also be useable at university food locations.
