5/14 - Victoria Schools and Background Checks
In Victoria Australia, it was recently reported that there are individuals on school grounds that have access to children are not being run through a criminal background check prior or during their employment.

As we live in an age where criminal background checks are easily accessible and affordable to run on individuals, it is still easy for individuals who have questionable records on their criminal history to find loopholes in the system that would allow them access to our children. The loophole that presently exists when it comes to access to children is the waste management contractors who are on the school grounds during the hours when the children are in class or on the playground. Presently the 40 to 80 contract waste management employees are not background screened.

It seems to be something that will be soon handled because of the press received. What I have learned in my involvement in the background screening process, is that individuals that have issues when it comes to children commonly seek out these types of opportunities to have access to youngsters. Wildly enough as any organization whether it be public or private as they begin to institute a through background screening process, there are some individuals that seem to no longer be interested in being involved in fear that they may soon be discovered.

You could almost assume that as the press coverage and pressure on the school system in Victoria grows, there will be a few of the contractors that will soon seek other careers.

The schools in Victoria have over one thousand contracts on their books and almost half of them are not required by the present legislation to be screened for their employment. There are several types of positions in the school system that are not required to be screened that would not put the contractor in any arena where the children are present and that is understandable. However, it’s these types of loop holes that people of ill intent seem to seek out.

As we all want to protect the children, we can not rely on the government to be responsible for the safety of our kids. We all have a responsibility to ensure that our children can grow and learn in a safe environment. Personally, I don’t believe that it’s our government’s responsibility to make sure that every precaution should be taken but our own responsibility. So don’t expect that our children are safe and that the people that they are in contact with have been screened and start to ask questions.

National criminal background checks, online sex offender registries, pre employment back ground checks and many other sources are available online and should be utilized. Implementing and Photo ID card and background check policy allows everyone to see exactly what individuals have been screened. When an individual is wearing a photo id card that identifies that he or she has been through a criminal background check screen provides quick and visible evidence of a successful screening process.
