Boston’s Governor Deval Patrick vetoed the bill requiring criminal background checks on employees of the Gaming Commission on Friday. The background checks were an amendment to a bill that were added by the House and Senate. One of the reasons for the additions was because of the newly attempted hire of C. Staney McGee as the interim executive director of the Gaming Commission. Mr Mcgee had sexual abuse allegations with a teenaged boy in Florida in 2007. That case or those charges were dismissed as the case was settled out of court.
The sections of the bill that were struck my Governor Deval Patrick were those that required criminal background checks and urine drug screening of the employees of the commission. Gov Patrick said that the requirement being for all employees was a little more than what should be completed. This was all regardless of the fact that the bill’s amendments had broad support by both Democrats and Republicans.
Being in the background check industry as well as being involved in youth sports, what we have found is that people who should not be involved in situations because of their backgrounds seek out the places were background check screening is not in place. It is surprising to most when an organization announces that mandatory background checks will be in place the number of people that would no longer want to be involved. When an organization announces incorporating criminal background checks, there are always people that hold a strong stance against the new policy. Those that take offence to the background checks are commonly the same individuals that decide to leave the organization.
Sex offender registries, national criminal background databases, FBI watch lists, local county and state databases are readily available for people to review. Many organizations have combined hundreds of criminal background files for quick reviews and for affordable prices.
It’s interesting to consider that most churches, schools and even volunteer coaching organizations require mandatory background checks for their participants while there are still some government agencies that don’t screen their potential or current employees. With that said, you might not be able to get a coaching position with the youth soccer association in your neighbor hood because of the crimes you committed and are now on your record. But don’t worry; you can apply with the Gaming commission of Massachusetts.
