Recently six potential candidates were asked to withdraw their applications from the police force in Montgomery County Pennsylvania. Apparently quite extensive background checks and investigations are performed prior to the hiring of police officers and to some extent through their own detectives.
It’s impressive to learn that this level of investigation and background screening is performed prior to the hiring as part of their regular practice. There are several organizations including government agencies where even the slightest of background checks are not required nor performed. When you hear news like this, it’s pleasing to learn that there are still some agencies that take it seriously when dealing with new candidates and their hiring practices.
There was some attention brought on them as to why they were asked to remove or withdraw their applications but the details were not disclosed.
Background checks, instant criminal background checks, sex offender databases and several other resources are readily available online for anyone to use. This police department had done quite a bit more that instant background checks since it was noted that there was over 5,000 spent on the screening that was performed on these candidates.
It’s understandable that the community would want to know why these individuals withdrew from the program; however, their privacy is factor particularly since they had not yet been hired into the program.
Most organizations do not screen their candidates this well when it comes to hiring practices and this department should be commended when it comes to the background screening that is performed prior to a candidates hiring.
One of the government agencies that does exemplary screening is the Federal Bureau of Investigations. When they review a perspective candidate before they are even put into any type of training program the family and friends of the candidate are interviewed by agents of the FBI as well as a review of all of the criminal background histories, and scans through several other resources.
Today, employers do not commonly have this level of screening; however, there is affordable background screening available through online services. The companies that provide these services gather data on a regular basis from counties, municipalities and state agencies. Also included in their database are the sex offender registries, terrorist watch lists and several federal databases.
Instant background checks for corporate America have become quite affordable and should be utilized when screening prospective candidates. Simply hiring and individual based on a resume doesn’t seem to be quite enough in today’s digital society.
