Military veterans should be entitled to state-issued identification cards or driver's licenses that can help them prove their military service for retail discounts and other purposes, the Louisiana Senate has decided. Sen. Robert Adley, R-Benton, asked colleagues last week to go along with House-made changes to his Senate Bill 157 to create the special licenses and IDs with the word "veteran" in black print below the individual's photo.

Adley said the only change the House made to his bill was to allow either official U.S. Defense Department discharge papers or an equivalent document to be used to identify the veteran when applying for the card. The state will draft rules to spell out what the "equivalent documents" are, Adley said.
The bill says that no added fee can be charged for the special license or ID. Adley said when he filed the bill that the card or license should make things easier for veterans who sometimes have to carry discharge papers or other documents around to prove their military service when applying for a retail discount or other benefits.
The bill now goes to Gov. Bobby Jindal, who can sign it into law, veto it or let it become law without acting on it. If it becomes law, it would take effect Aug. 1.
