Kenyans seeking national identity cards will not be forced to go back to their ancestral areas to get the vital document, Immigration Minister Otieno Kajwang has said.
Speaking in Busia at the weekend, Kajwang directed District Registrar of Persons to issue ID cards to Kenyans wherever they are as long as they meet the minimum requirements needed to acquire the document.
He said most of those seeking ID cards were young people who had no jobs and sending such people back to their home areas for the document was punitive and uncalled for.
He said that the Government had put in place measures to ensure that the document is not issued to foreigners adding those found helping them to get IDs will be prosecuted.
