In this present age, we’ve seen of why our companies should be utilizing these tools. It’s a little bit of money and a little bit of time but, in the long run, I believe it’s worth the effort when it comes to the safety of our companies, employees and customers.

In fairly recent news I stumbled upon an article about Kurt Wresh’s dismay as he found that one of his employees, Greg Sissala, had been arrested. What came as the biggest shock to Mr. Wresh was the unsettling fact that Sissala was actually a convicted sex offender and failed to register as such upon moving to a new address. Now, if you don’t know much about Wresh’s company, it provides the service of delivering inflatable bounce houses for children’s birthday parties, graduation parties and the like. Considering the nature of Sissala’s crime back in 1995, this is a scene that would strike fear into the heart of any parent out there! When interviewing Wresh, it was stated that Sissala mainly worked around the warehouse so, fortunately, he didn’t have much, if any, contact with children. However, seeing that Wresh had no idea about the crimes in Sissala’s past, he may have at some point asked Sissala to do a delivery or help set up at a party.
Now, to be fair, Wresh did do a basic back ground check screening (Drivers License screening/ drug screening), but clearly nothing extensive enough to pull any criminal history. As stated above, fortunately no crimes did occur with Sissala on the job, but the possibility is too close for comfort. It certainly seems to me that if they had run a full back ground check, Sisala would not have been hired. I do certainly believe in forgiveness and I don’t believe that anyone with a criminal history should be denied a job everywhere, but I certainly believe that certain jobs are not suitable for those with particular crimes in their past. In this case, I don’t find it wise to higher a convicted sex offender to work in an arena where he may have contact with children the increased necessity for criminal screenings within our companies due to the frequency of crime in our nation. Fortunately, we also have the highest amount of access to background check services than any other generation before us. Maybe that’s due to crime’s crescendo but, nevertheless, we have valuable tools and very easy access. In Kurt Wresh’s case, owner of USA Inflatables, we find a primary example
and teenagers.
I realize that there are some that may find a way to beat the system, as there always are, but doing pre-employment background checks is a certainly a helpful tool in making better, safer decisions about hiring future employees. It’s a wise way to take a better step forward.
