Why College ID Badges Should Have an Expiration Date

College ID BadgesOne of the many perks of being a student is that there are plenty of discounts to go around! All across the world phone companies, participating restaurants, gyms, movie theaters and more will give special pricing to students if they present their ID at the time of purchase. I love that. College students don’t make a lot of money and this is a very helpful resource during those educational years. However, many student ID badges don’t contain an expiration date which allows students to take advantage of the system long after their schooling days are over.

What’s the Big Deal?

This may not seem like a big deal for some students to take advantage of the system after they are no longer students. After all, how many of them could there really be? Well, it turns out there are quite a few ID badges out there that won’t ever expire. It’s no small sum that are getting to use discounts passed their eligibility. This leads to company’s having to hand out discounts to more students that they bargained for. That’s unfair to the company and to the economy as a whole.

Additionally, on a moral note, when we give young people the ability to take advantage of the system, they will. Part of becoming an adult is learning how to work and use your money wisely. When young people are allowed to take advantage of the system by issuing never ending student ID badges, we’re allowing them to delay adulthood which delays the process of becoming positive contributors to society. It seems harmless but it really sends a bigger message that it’s ok to take advantage of the system if the opportunity is there.
